Burkina Faso
Section Jump
Burkina Faso is a small landlocked country with only a handful of natural and man-made lakes [Lake Bam, Lake Dem, Lake Higa, Lake Kompienga, Mare aux Hippopotames, Mare d'Oursi & Lake Tengrela]. In the manmade lakes locals have learned to fish for subsistence and to sell on to local markets catching catfish and tilapia.

Given the lack of coast, paucity of inland lakes and lack of tourists there is no appreciable pleasure angling activity although the main river - part of the Volta, has possibilities.

Several of the lakes are very shallow and drying out, a problem for local people and more so as they have wetlands of international importance. One lake, Mare aux Hippopotames does attract around 1,000 ecotourists a year as the surrounding area is a wildlife reserve.
