Cook Islands
Section Jump
The Cook Islands is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean in 'free association' with New Zealand. It comprises 15 small islands whose total land area is 240 square kilometres. The Cook Islands' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), however, covers 1,800,000 square kilometres of ocean. The Cook Islands' defence and foreign affairs are the responsibility of New Zealand, which is exercised in consultation with the Cook Islands. In recent times, the Cook Islands have adopted an increasingly independent foreign policy. Although Cook Islanders are citizens of New Zealand.

The Cook Islands' main population centres are on the island of Rarotonga where there is an international airport. There is a much larger population of Cook Islanders in New Zealand, particularly the North Island. With about 100,000 visitors travelling to the islands (2011) tourism is the country's main industry, and the leading element of the economy, far ahead of offshore banking, pearls, and marine and fruit exports.

The Cook Islands are in the South Pacific Ocean, northeast of New Zealand, between French Polynesia and American Samoa. There are 15 major islands spread over 2.2 million sq km of ocean, divided into two distinct groups: the Southern Cook Islands and the Northern Cook Islands of coral atolls. The islands were formed by volcanic activity; the northern group is older and consists of six atolls, which are sunken volcanoes topped by coral growth. The climate is moderate to tropical.

Bonefish are the jewel in the crown of the lagoon fish but there are also several species of Trevally. Large streamer flies and poppers are the most popular choice of lure and a heavier leader is always a good idea as the trevally can be monsters. Out in the blue water fish can be targeted just out of the lagoon with one of the experienced charter operators. As soon as you leave the Avatiu Harbour the water gets very deep, very quickly so no time is wasted getting into the water as within minutes of leaving the harbour you are fishing. There many different type of fish in the ocean around Rarotonga. What is around at what time though depends on season on also what bait is around. Species include Skip Jack Tuna, Yellow Fin Tuna, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Blue Marlin, Black Marlin and Sailfish.

Fly Fishing Penrhyn Atoll, Cook Islands, 2003

An exploratory fly fishing trip to Tongareva back in 2003 with Aussie mates, Rob Watts and Graham Rowles produced many fond memories, lasting friendships, and some very lovely bonefish. Were we the first to take bonefish on the fly at Penrhyn? I'm not sure, but we were the first to give it a serious look over and document it in FlyLife issue #34. Music by John Legend.
