Tidal 'river' to Salt Lake
How can I forget the day I discovered paradise! Work took us to Fiji in 1997, and there we stayed for over three years. The land was beautiful at first sight for sure, but it did not find its way to that special place in my heart until one summer day (every day in Fiji is more or less a beautiful summer day really) but this was one for the memory book.

We had spent countless hours crisscrossing the crystal blue waters aboard a 26ft Fraser V-Hull named Princess Azura (named after my daughter). Day after glorious day, we trolled the outer reefs, running lures behind the boat as we made our way through Islands and to and from the FADs* put in place by the Marine and Fisheries Dept. Mahimahi, barracuda and yellowfin tuna were the typical catch of the day. When we wanted something different, it was bottom fishing for grouper or casting lures against the reef in hopes of catching the elusive GT (aka Giant Trevally or Giant Kingfish).

This day started out like many others for my 3-year-old son and me. A stop at McDonald for a grab and go breakfast and off we went, towards Beqa of the famous Beqa Lagoon.

I had settled in the fighting chair starring out over the gentle swells of the South Pacific, with my son lying down on the seat along the gunnel sick from the same swells I found tantalising. Then the drag on the reel started to yell. All motion sickness forgotten, my 3-year-old leaped into my lap and proceeded to battle a 3.5 foot barracuda - his first fish and the start of his love for big game fishing.

We moved away from Fiji all too soon and in spite of all the fishing adventures that followed, I yearned to return to the waters where my son and I found and shared a love for the pristine waters of the South Pacific and the fish beneath it.

Our dream came true 18 years later. As the plane doors opened I was greeted with the same sights and sounds that welcomed me all those years ago; my fishing senses told me that nothing had changed. The only difference was the destination, specifically, the so-called North. I grabbed our bag, which included multiple rods, reels and tackle and we made our way over to the domestic terminal. The Island of Vanua Levu, The North; Fiji's Hidden Paradise, here I come!

The plane touched down just outside the sleepy town of Savusavu. The drive along the coast left me anxious to get a line in the water. It did not take long for us to get to the famous lodge. My son and I jumped into a 14ft skiff with a local friend and started out down a river, the same river we now call home. We quickly dispatched a vintage Rapala and before we could reach the mouth and venture out to the Koro sea, the reel was screaming and we quickly landed the first of many fish that day.

Having had the privilege to have fished saltwater in 23 different countries, my love for Fiji, its people and the amazing fishing has left a permanent mark on me. I now call this Hidden Paradise my home.

Now, the river where the reel shrieked is the very same one where my 22- year-old son caught his 2nd barracuda, it is a pristine tidal river, the very same river that goes with the tides from the crystal clear waters of the Koro Sea into the inland Salt Lake, and back out again with the tides. It really is a perfect location for all levels of angling, including fly-fishing in the lake. There is no bad weather here. When the sea turns choppy, we bottom fish in the lake. Fish abound in all the secret fishing holes, and here every spot you care to cast your line is a secret fishing hole.

I like to think we have grown into mature fisherman and responsible adults as we now practice catch and release fish whether big or small, fishing just for the pleasure of the sport. Once again we troll the outer reefs between Islands and FADs, bottom fish for grouper, and cast for the elusive GT. The only difference now is when we go home it's only to change lures.

* A fish aggregating (or aggregation) device (FAD) is a man-made object used to attract ocean going pelagic fish such as marlin, tuna and mahi-mahi (dolphin fish). They usually consist of buoys or floats tethered to the ocean floor with concrete blocks. Over 300 species of fish gather around FADs. FADs attract fish for numerous reasons that vary by species. Fish tend to move around FADs in varying orbits, rather than remaining stationary below the buoys. Both recreational and commercial fisheries use FADs. Before FADs, commercial tuna fishing used purse seining to target surface-visible aggregations of birds and dolphins, which were a reliable signal of the presence of tuna schools below. The demand for dolphin-safe tuna was a driving force for FADs.
